TURBAN

Women wore turbans as a way of distinguishing themselves from the past, socially constrained woman. Some wore turbans as a way of displaying their free, pure and wild look. [33] Turbans before this time were worn mostly by men. [34] The fact that the flappers adopted wearing the turban suggest that they felt closer to their male counterparts because they received freedoms granted to them in the 19th amendment that men had already acquired. Flappers were also participating in activities that they would have never done before such as smoking, drinking and being more openly sexually. Flappers, in their clothing and in their action, were showing the world that they were not as closed off and restricted as they were before WWI and the passing of the 19th amendment. While turbans were not as popular as some of the other trends adopted by flappers, they were nevertheless used by flappers to display their free-will and independence.
