Eye Products

Flappers accentuated their eyes using products such as eyeliner and mascara. Flappers would draw thick, black lines around their eyes to make them stand out. [35] Mascara was in its new stages and had not yet been perfected. It came in the forms of cake, wax and liquid. [36] Because the circular wand brush women use today had not yet been invented, flappers that desired a more dramatic effect used the Kurlash eyelash curler, invented by William Beldue in 1923. [37] By using products to drawing dark black lines around their eyes, women not only made their facial features stand out, but also themselves stand out in society.

This picture shows a mascara sold by the beauty company Maybelline. Maybelline sold a cake mascara that came with a set of instructions, a brush and a photo of actress Mildred Davis’ eyes. [38]
